St. Catherine MA
Greek Orthodox Church in Braintree MA
The challenge for this project was to develop a phased plan that was within budget and at the same time used materials benefiting both the local context and appropriate for the ecclesiastical nature of the project.
In Metro Boston, the “Athens of The New World,” the new St. Catherine’s was designed in the tradition of central Byzantine-style churches. It’s large copper dome topped with a Justinian-style cross is visible from the nearby Southeast Expressway. The exterior is brick and stone with red clay tile roofs reflective of the Boston vernacular.
The first phase of 12,600 sq. ft. including administration building, classrooms for the Sunday and Greek School, offices for the Priest and Parish council and other Church Organizations, a Secretarial area, small hall with a kitchen for social gatherings and an interim Church Sanctuary, was completed in 2003. Phase two - the construction of the new 8,460 sq. ft. 500 seat, $3.6 million Church was completed in 2008.
The third phase will include a cultural center and additional meetings/educational facilities.
